The Mission

The Mission was a story about a jesuit priest had ventured into the jungle to save indigenous tribes from the wrath of hell. The story may have not been historically accurate but it painted the picture of what more than likely went on between the two groups of people in the new world.  One group was fighting for divine human rights and the other was fighting for the "divine right" to rule.

Both groups of people in the new world were wanting to further their ideals and desires and who is to say which was right or which was wrong.  According to Stevens the tribes were willing to move to missions for an industrial advantage.  This was also seen in the movie when they priest is showing the bishop the different tribes living within the missions and how that have been able to make and manufacture tools and machinery for their mission the surrounding tribes.  Modernization can be seen as beneficial and negative depending on what is valued in life by the individual or group of individuals therefore it is hard to tell whether the groups were benefitting or hindering the indigenous tribes.

The two groups were fighting to control groups that were both wanting to further their ideals.  The monarch wanted to control the indigenous population and make the loyal to the crown while the jesuits wanted the people to become loyal to their God. Andrien had stated how the Inca civilization had revolted against the Spanish in 1742 (199).  This revolt was very similar to revolt in the movie because the village was fighting for the doctrine they were taught and were not understanding how people of the same belief and religion were not willing and wanting to harm them.  It was interesting to see how the Inca vcivliation that is mentioned by Andrien and the one in the movie were willing to fight for a doctrine that was foreign for their tribe and tradition.

The movie gave a description of a scenario of possible could have happened between two groups of people who were fighting and wanting to rule over the indigenous population.  It was more accurate than not if you look at the general description it presents.  It involves two groups claiming to fight for the divine right to rule, it claims an indigenous population that is willing to fight for their beliefs whether foreign or not, it show a man who was torn between accepting the religious aspects of his position of power and the others that should protect and help his fellow man.  It may have not been completely historically accurate but it gave a great description and picture of what more than likely happening in the new world during this time.
